INSTALLATION!!
If you Have FLAGS on a diskette...
1> Make the default the drive and directory you have the FLAGS
Installation files. (ie, A:\)
2> Type in:
INSTALL (1)
Where (1) is the Disk drive letter where you want FLAGS to live.
(Ex, for FLAGS to end up on Drive C, Enter: INSTALL C)
3> Follow the instructions...
4> You'll need PKZIP in your path if you're working with an application
version of Flags. Application versions for FoxPRO 2.0 and dBASE IV
are smaller than stand alone (executable) versions, and are available
to registered users of the executable versions for a small handling
and postage fee.
If you experience difficulty with messages such as "out of environment space"
or the like, do one the following:
Bump (increase) your environment space (see your DOS manual)
Clear out some environment space
Install FLAGS manually.
FLAGS only needs this environment space during installation.
To install FLAGS manually:
1> Create \FLAGS Subdirectory and make it the default.
2> Move the Files to \FLAGS:
FLAG?.ZIP (or EXE, if distributed as such)
3> If this is an upgrade, type in the following:
COPY MAIN\MASTER.DBF MAIN\MASTER.FRT
4> Execute the FLAG? File
PKUNZIP FLAG? -O -D
or
FLAG? -O -D if it was distributed as an EXE
5> Copy these files to \FLAGS\MAIN:
INSTALL.BAT
README.1ST (This file)
README.DOC (update information)
*********************************************************
* IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, USE THE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE!!! *
*********************************************************
To Run Flags:
1> move to FLAGS Directory --> CD \FLAGS
2> start FLAGS--> FLAGS
Application versions use XXX FLAGS
(where XXX is the program name, ie Dbase, Foxpro, etc)
MAKE SURE YOU'VE GOT A PATH TO EITHER DBASE OR FOXPRO SET UP!!!
For more detailed information on FLAGS, see the file FLAGS.DOC
located in your \FLAGS directory. For the most recent FLAGS information,
see the file README.DOC located in \FLAGS\MAIN.
========================================================================
Welcome to FLAGS...FLatfile Application Generator System. This is
based on the AGS system, but is a lot more solid (we hope).
When you install, the following occurs:
1> Directory \Flags set up. The program file (Flags.???) is
placed here, as well as the documentation file FLAGS.DOC
2> Directory \Flags\Main set up. All support DBFs, Bats, etc.
are placed here. So is the update documentation, this file, etc.
3> Directory \Flags\House is set up. The sample application
HOUSE is placed there.
4> Directory \Flags\Hse_type is set up. This sample application
demonstrates the relationship capability (this option works for
Dbase IV and Foxpro only). It's not included in the Dbase III+
or Foxbase versions.
Some quick instructions and limitations:
1> What this system does is allow you to design and maintain
a single database entry system. By creating an application,
you can keep track of reports, mailing labels, filters and
other goodies. You can have as many applications as you
want, and may cancel at any time.
2> Watch out for any direct changes you make to any of these
systems, such as from the dot prompt. Flags may not understand
what you did. Count on it!
3> Flags handles memo fields, but rather oddly. During entry,
the user would say "Y" at the memo field. Then he(she) would
indicate later that they want to save it, and the system will
provide a memo edit screen at this point.
4> Flags insists that each application database has at least
one indexed field.
5> Flags does not handle "creative", ie multi-field index files in
the current versions. Actually it can...but you have to create
a calculated field that is equal to the new index...Tricky, huh?
6> Flags assumes that you started it from the "\Flags" directory,
and that a path is to the calling program (Dbase, Foxplus, etc.)
7> Flags can easily confuse you. Can you confuse Flags?
8> You can use Flags on a network, but only one person in an applica-
tion at a time. It uses those DBF's Exclusively. Remember that
this sucker is written in Dbase III+.
9> Flags will allow you to set a relation to 1 (count 'em one)
other Flags database per application (dBase IV and FoxPro ONLY!)
This relation is active for Reports and Labels.
What you are holding in your ethereal hands is the FLAGS system. No
doubt there are some problems and someareas where improvements can be
made. We'd appreciate any suggestions of both or either. Potential
problem areas include:
.
.
.
Bizarre Calculated fields
.
Things we never dreamed of doing.
Anyway, give this sucker a shot...we'd appreciate it.
This is a complete rehash of the AGS. If you downloaded AGS
already, sorry to make you do it again. Actually, this version seems
to be worth the extra effort (famous last words). There is a
tremendous amount of changes here. They're really two different
products.

Generally only one flavour at a time, although you could put more than

up some of the others...)
They're all the same programs. Just different compilations of the same.
These files are contained in the \FLAGS\HOUSE directory. They're a sample
application:
CREATE.DBF The FLAGS information file about the HOUSE Database
FLT.DBF The FLAGS file for storing Library Filters
HOUSE.DBF The Data file itself
MAIN.DBF FLAGS Application information

Good luck, and good hunting!
